A Year’s sketching

I’ve been practising tonal values over the weekend and I’m happier with this result.  It’s handy having offspring who can draw and give their mum some tips.  Being black and white I can’t tell if they are Egrets or Herons
Of course, I used a picture for the study.

I used Faber Castell pencils HB and 4B and a rubbing stick, which I’d never used before…well I have used a cotton bud but the fine tip on the stick reaches into narrow areas and still keeps the line pretty straight.

  1. Yes, those pointy stumps are great. This drawing is very dramatic and impressive!

    • Thanks Diane. I’ll have to try more.

    • Thanks Diane, I’m pleased you like it. The rubbing stick was fantastic. It worked into the paper depressions so easily. I’ll be using it a lot now.

  2. Nice work! The birds look so realistic and I like their varying wingspans. Oddly, I have some of those rubbing sticks in my stash. No clue why!

    • Thanks Mary Anne for the comment. I was very happy myself with the result. The rubbing stick really brought the birds to life.
I don’t think the sticks would be any good for cuticles LOL.

      • hah – if I ever did anything to/with my nails they’d probably all fall off in shock!

  3. That’s amazing! If I had seen it somewhere else, I would have thought it was a photo of birds flying. Your skills are so impressive!

    • Thank you Susan for the lovely compliment. I’ll be using that stick more often now.
